Roger Harbert was born in the bayou country of central Louisiana
and grew up harvesting crayfish - which are also known as "crawdads" or "little tiny lobsters."
His appreciation for music began very early on and came from his older brother, Chet, who played the banjo.
Chet was born with only one eye in the middle of his head and wrote songs including: "I'm Gone Keel You" and "I See You Behin At Tree." As a child, Roger had very little contact with the outside world and spent much of his time wandering through the swamp land saying "mm hmm." Ironically, his first movie, 1983's Swamp Thing, caused him to move out of bayou country. The movie - a touching and tragic tale of Alec Holland's transformation into the hideous swamp creature - frightened Roger. After a heartfelt goodbye, Roger set out for the big city turning around one last time as he walked away only to see a tear roll out of Chet's lone eye. In the city, Roger learned how to form complete sentences and to use words like "here" instead of "heeeya." His adjustment allowed him to enter the local community college where he studied art history. Recalls his professor, "He had no understanding of art, whatsoever. He used to look at all the paintings and just say "mm hmm." After realizing the community college charged money for these classes, Roger decided to drop out and head west. Ten miles west, Roger stopped at a local Cajun restaurant and asked if they had any jobs. Fortunately for all, they did. As a cook, Roger displayed an amazing ability in preparing all kinds of dishes. Soon, word spread and the restaurant, "Little Tiny Lobsters," became the talk of the region. One hot July evening, the band Patsy's deCline came to play at "Little Tiny Lobsters." After the night had ended, the band asked Roger if he'd like to be the new drummer. "mm hmm." |
