Jim Doyle
was born in a grain elevator on his families' farm in northern Nebraska. After
initially being named "Shaft Doyle," in honor of both the grain elevator shaft and
the popular television show, his name was changed to Jim. Growing up, Jim lived a
normal farm life of breakfast, chores, school, chores, killing farm animals, supper,
homework, and bed.
In his teen years, Jim rebelled against his highly structured environment. His much-talked about stunts included; demolishing the neighbor's house with a tractor, setting fire to the American Legion Hall, liberating the area's livestock into the woods, and speeding. After tough love proved ineffective, Jim was shipped off to the military. In the Air Force, Jim adjusted his attitude and flourished as a naval pilot. According to his instructor, "Jim thought flying an F-16 was a lot like driving a tractor." Added the instructor, "I have no idea why. The two are nothing alike." When asked about Jim, another naval pilot noted, "Chicks dig pilots." After the service, Jim moved to Cincinnati and returned to farming. Over time, he struck up a friendship with a neighbor who belonged to an aspiring band. After a few jam sessions, Jim was in as the guitarist. "They sucked," remembered an elderly neighbor. "Used to play 'Fool for the City' all day long." After realizing the band would never be famous with just one cover song, Jim struck out in search of a new band. After watching the local band Patsy's deCline, who knew at least 10 cover songs, Jim decided this was where he needed to be. When asked about Jim, bass player Chris Branch responded "He plays Foghat really well." |
